Protocols OPC UA

Does Nodlyn support OPC UA?

Read and write industrial tags from OPC UA servers — common on modern PLCs and SCADA gateways.

Manual endpoint

Compatibility answer

Yes — at the protocol level. Nodlyn ships OPC UA blocks in the connector library; you point them at your host or broker.

Point an OPC UA node at your server endpoint (opc.tcp://…) — no subnet scan required.

What OPC UA support means in Nodlyn

OPC UA is the modern industrial tag layer: secure endpoints, browsable node IDs, and setpoints you can write from a workflow. Nodlyn’s OPC UA blocks connect to servers from TIA Portal, TwinCAT, Kepware, Ignition, and similar stacks — you paste the opc.tcp URL and choose the tag.

There is no subnet “OPC UA scan” like Modbus port 502; compatibility means the connector + auth modes you configure in the Inspector. Once connected, the same Condition / Alert / Database blocks work as with any other protocol.

This page is a compatibility check (supported or not, how you connect). Step-by-step tutorials live on the blog when linked below — so Google (and readers) get one clear “how-to” URL.

Example automations with OPC UA

  • Tag read → condition → maintenance ticket
  • Write setpoint from approved workflow
  • SCADA gateway → dashboard feed

Quick start for OPC UA

  1. Add an OPC UA block from the Devices & Protocols palette.
  2. Enter the server URL and security settings from your PLC/SCADA docs.
  3. Select the tag (node id) to read or write.
  4. Wire the value into conditions, databases, or alerts.

Brands people ask about for OPC UA

Curated examples — not an exhaustive SKU database. Same protocol family usually wires the same way. Missing model? Request confirmation on /protocols.

  • Siemens (OPC UA)
  • Beckhoff
  • Kepware / PTC
  • Ignition (OPC UA)

Do I need discovery for OPC UA?

No. Point an OPC UA node at your server endpoint (opc.tcp://…) — no subnet scan required. Discovery is optional for protocols that use a known URL, broker, or PLC address.
