Smart Home Automation use case

Automate lights, sensors, locks, and Matter/Zigbee/Z-Wave devices on your LAN — local-first workflows you can monitor in Cloud.

This page is an industry overview (templates + protocols). For step-by-step configuration, use the blog/wiki links below — those URLs are the primary how-to pages.

The problem

Cloud-only hubs lock you into one brand and break when the internet drops. Nodlyn runs Discovery and workflows on your machine.

Who it’s for: Homeowners, makers, and integrators who already run Zigbee2MQTT, Matter, MQTT, or Tuya local devices.

How Nodlyn approaches Smart Home Automation

Smart-home automation in Nodlyn starts on the LAN: Discovery finds Matter, Zigbee (via Zigbee2MQTT), Z-Wave, Bluetooth, and local Tuya devices, then you wire them on the same canvas as MQTT and HTTP. That keeps motion→lights→notify logic running when a vendor cloud is down.

Unlike consumer hubs that hide the graph, every condition, delay, and approval is visible — and your free account lets you watch runs in Cloud without moving device credentials off the PC.

Example workflows

  • Motion sensor → AI camera classify → lights on + Slack if unknown person
  • Door unlock at night → snapshot → approve before disarming alarm flow
  • Matter / Zigbee temp threshold → notify + optional plug off

Quick start

  1. Open Discovery → Smart devices (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter) or Nearby Bluetooth.
  2. Accept devices into the workspace, or point MQTT/HTTP nodes at your broker/API.
  3. Drop a template (sensor threshold, MQTT→Slack, Matter discovery) and wire conditions.
  4. Sign in with your free account so Studio and Cloud can show run activity.

Starter templates in Studio

Open Templates in desktop Studio and search these names — they are real built-in graphs, not placeholder titles.

  • Sensor Threshold Alert
  • ZigBee → Nous Plug
  • Approved Z-Wave Command
  • MQTT Device Event → Slack
  • Matter Discovery

Does Nodlyn replace Home Assistant or a vendor hub?

No. Nodlyn is a visual workflow layer on your LAN — Discovery + templates beside Zigbee2MQTT, Matter, MQTT, or Tuya local. Your free account is for Studio identity and Cloud run monitoring.
