Use cases Industrial Monitoring
Industrial Monitoring use case
Poll PLCs and meters over Modbus, OPC UA, Siemens S7, BACnet, or CAN — then alert, log, and escalate without a full SCADA rewrite.
This page is an industry overview (templates + protocols). For step-by-step configuration, use the blog/wiki links below — those URLs are the primary how-to pages.
The problem
Plant data is stuck in proprietary HMIs. Nodlyn sits beside the PLC as visual automation glue on the edge PC.
Who it’s for: Maintenance engineers, OT integrators, and facilities teams with LAN access to controllers.
How Nodlyn approaches Industrial Monitoring
Industrial monitoring here means talking the languages already on the plant floor — Modbus TCP discovery on port 502, OPC UA endpoints, Siemens S7 rack/slot, BACnet/IP, CAN frames, and serial meters — then branching into logs and alerts.
Nodlyn is not a replacement DCS; it is the automation layer that polls tags, evaluates thresholds, and escalates. Runtime agents keep the loop alive on the edge PC after you close Studio.
Example workflows
- Modbus register over threshold → Slack/SMS + ServiceNow-style ticket path
- OPC UA / S7 tag poll → InfluxDB or SQLite log → daily summary
- BACnet room temp → HVAC alert; CAN RPM decode → fleet notify
Quick start
- Discovery → Industrial (Modbus/BACnet) or set PLC IP / opc.tcp endpoint manually.
- Map registers or tags into Condition blocks.
- Start from Modbus→Slack, Modbus→Influx, BACnet, or CAN templates.
- Export a runtime agent to keep polling when Studio is closed.
Starter templates in Studio
Open Templates in desktop Studio and search these names — they are real built-in graphs, not placeholder titles.
- Modbus PLC → InfluxDB Logger
- Modbus Threshold → Slack Alert
- OPC UA → InfluxDB
- BACnet Temperature → Slack
- CAN RPM → Slack

Is Nodlyn a SCADA or DCS replacement?
No. It polls Modbus/OPC UA/S7/BACnet/CAN, evaluates thresholds, and alerts or logs. Runtime agents keep the loop on the edge PC; PLC programs stay where they are.
